Today Congress extended the current low 3.4 percent interest rate on Stafford loans for one year. This affects the 7.4 million students expected to sign new Stafford loan agreements starting July 1, 2012. Without the extension, the rate on these government-subsidized student loans would have doubled to 6.8 percent, costing a typical student an additional $1000 over the life of the loan.
