Most U.S. colleges that accept federal student aid are required to have “net price calculators” on their websites. However, a new study finds that some colleges do not have the calculator available or there is no easily found link to the calculator from the college website’s financial aid page. Many of the calculators were difficult to use – asking between 8 to 70 questions. Often the results between different calculators were confusing to compare, because some colleges subtracted student loans or work income from the net price, while other colleges did not. Forty percent of calculators gave out-of-date results generating net price estimates for academic years as early as 2008-09.
